Frequently Asked Questions

Is ExpenDiv free to use?

Yes. ExpenDiv has a free plan with unlimited shared expenses and unlimited participants. The Premium plan is $3.99/month (or $39.99/year) and adds automated daily reminders, customizable reminder tone and timing, and bill due alerts.

Do the people I bill need to create an account?

No. Only the bill owner needs an ExpenDiv account. The people you split bills with just receive reminder emails, no sign-up required on their end.

How does ExpenDiv send payment reminders?

ExpenDiv sends email reminders to participants who have not yet paid. Premium subscribers get automated daily reminders sent every morning. All plans support manual reminder sending at any time, with a 24-hour cooldown per participant.

What kinds of bills can I split with ExpenDiv?

Any shared recurring or one-time expense: rent, Netflix, Spotify, utilities, groceries, gym memberships, and more. You can add a payment link (Venmo, CashApp, PayPal) to your profile so recipients can pay you directly from the reminder email.

Can I use ExpenDiv to split rent with roommates?

Yes. Rent is one of the most common bills people track on ExpenDiv. Add the total rent amount, add each roommate by email, and ExpenDiv splits it, tracks who has paid, and sends reminders automatically. Your roommates never need to create an account to pay their share.

Can I cancel my Premium subscription?

Yes. You can cancel anytime from the Settings page. There are no contracts or cancellation fees, and your account immediately downgrades to the free plan.

How do I get paid back?

Add your Venmo, CashApp, or PayPal link in Settings. ExpenDiv includes a payment button in every reminder email so participants can pay you in one tap.

How does ExpenDiv compare to Splitwise?

Both apps help you track shared expenses, but they are built for different situations. Splitwise is designed for group settlement where everyone has an account and expenses can go in multiple directions. ExpenDiv is built for one person managing recurring bills (rent, utilities, streaming subscriptions) and collecting from others. Participants never need to create an account; they just receive email reminders. For a detailed side-by-side breakdown, see our full comparison at expendiv.com/blog/expendiv-vs-splitwise.

Is my data secure?

Yes. ExpenDiv never stores payment card details (those are handled by Stripe). All other data is stored in an encrypted PostgreSQL database via Supabase, secured in transit and at rest.

How do I mark someone as paid?

When a participant clicks the payment button in their reminder email, they are automatically marked as paid and you receive a confirmation email. You can also mark anyone as paid manually by opening the bill on your dashboard, finding the participant, and toggling "Paid."

How do I split bills unequally between roommates?

When you add a participant to a bill, you set the exact amount they owe. There is no requirement to split equally. You can assign different amounts to each person based on room size, usage, income, or any other arrangement you agree on.

How do I split bills when roommates have different incomes?

ExpenDiv lets you set a custom amount for each participant. Some households split bills proportionally to income: for example, if one person earns twice as much, they pay two-thirds and the other pays one-third. Just enter the amounts you agree on and ExpenDiv tracks and reminds accordingly.

What happens if a roommate does not pay?

ExpenDiv keeps the bill marked as unpaid and continues sending reminder emails until the participant is marked as paid. On the Premium plan, automated daily reminders go out every morning until payment is confirmed. You can also send a manual reminder at any time (with a 24-hour cooldown per person).

How is ExpenDiv different from requesting money on Venmo?

A Venmo request is a one-time manual action with no tracking or follow-up. ExpenDiv tracks every recurring bill, remembers who owes what each month, and sends automatic reminder emails with your Venmo (or CashApp, PayPal) link already in the message. If a roommate does not pay, ExpenDiv follows up automatically, with no extra effort from you.

Can I attach both Venmo and CashApp as payment options?

Yes. You can add multiple payment links in Settings: Venmo, CashApp, PayPal, and Zelle are all supported. All of them appear as buttons in every reminder email so participants can pay using whichever method they prefer.

Is ExpenDiv available as a mobile app?

ExpenDiv is a web-first app that works in any browser on any device: phone, tablet, or desktop. No download is required. On iPhone and Android, you can also install it as a PWA (Progressive Web App) from your browser to get an app-like experience with a home screen icon.

Can I try ExpenDiv before signing up?

Yes. You can explore the app with a free account. No credit card required. The free plan includes unlimited expenses and unlimited participants with manual reminders, so you can fully test the core features before deciding whether to upgrade.
